  • If you are looking for a professional solution to process media files and live audio/video signals (IP streaming, HDMI, SDI, etc.), check "Video Quality Monitor".

MediaQual is a very convenient tool to check media files format and measure video quality and audio quality (also called QoE: Quality of Experience).

Offering MediaQual for free is a way for us to give you a taste of our perceived video and audio quality metrics.

Using AI and more specifically neural networks and machine learning, our video quality metrics produce perceived video quality scores expressed on a MOS (Mean Opinion Score) scale and correlated with human judgment of video qualty. MediaQual's perceived video quality metrics are dedicated to HEVC (H.265), MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) and MPEG-2 video encoding formats. These video quality metrics have been optimized to produce quality scores which are highly correlated with human jugdments collected during subjective quality assessment tests in normalized conditions (ITU BT.500 and ITU BT.710).

Getting started with MediaQual

MediaQual supports:

  • the most common containers: AVI, MP4, TS, MOV, WMV, PS, ...
  • the most common video encoding standards: HEVC (H.265), MPEG-4/AVC (H.264), MPEG-4/SP, MPEG-2, ...
  • the most common audio encoding standards: MP3, AC3, AAC, DTS, FLAC, ...

MediaQual displays:

  • details about the container: format, duration, number of streams, ...
  • details about the video stream(s): codec, resolution, frame rate, colorspace, duration, ...
  • details about the audio stream(s): codec, sampling rate, number of channels, sample format, ...
  • details about the subtitles stream(s): codec, format, duration, ...
  • details about the data stream(s): codec, format, duration, ...

Once a video is loaded, the parameters of its video, audio, subtitles are data streams are indicated.

The interface (which is available in 2 themes: dark and light) also displays:

  • the first video frame
  • the waveform of the last audio packet (the one read just before the displayed video frame)

Seeking, measuring video quality and audio quality

The interface supplies a slider, expressed in number of video frames, which enables to seek to a user-chosen video frame.

Just hit the "Measure video quality and audio quality" button, and MediaQual will measure video quality and audio quality, starting from the position indicated by the slider.

MediaQual measures:

  • the video quality of the 5 first video frames, starting from the position indicated by the slider
  • The audio quality of 1 second of audio, starting from the position indicated by the slider

After measurement, MediaQual will display:

  • The video quality score ranging from 0 to 100 (higher is better) computed over these 5 video frames
  • The mean values of measured video quality indicators: blockiness (lower is better), blur (lower is better), contrast (higher is better), flatness (lower is better), jerkiness (in milliseconds, lower is better)
  • The audio quality score ranging from 0 to 100 (higher is better) computed over 1 second of audio

At last, MediaQual enables you to export all printed information to a text file.

Conclusion

MediaQual is a very convenient tool for people working with media files who want to inspect audio/video streams.
